Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Proficiency in leading worship with the organ, piano, and keyboard accompaniment.
• Ability to accompany vocal or instrumental soloists or ensembles.
• Familiarity with Lutheran worship practices and principles.
• Appreciation for, and knowledge of, a wide range of traditional and contemporary musical styles and repertoire.
• Skill at using music publishing software.
• Ability to inspire and work effectively and harmoniously with a staff team, and a wide range of volunteers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead traditional worship music using the organ or keyboard
• Work with the pastor and music staff to plan all regular and special worship services, following the overall direction specified by the worship committee.
• Select music for all traditional worship services, coordinating the hymns and songs with the pastor’s preaching themes, the liturgical seasons, and or the lectionary, as appropriate. Emphasize music which is accessible and inspiring for the congregation.
• Select appropriate music for traditional worship services.
• May opt to serve as the primary church musician for weddings and funerals. Members who desire to use other musicians may do so after receiving permission of the Director of Traditional Music and making appropriate arrangements with the Director of Traditional Music.
• Maintain a file of all church-owned traditional music, as well as music used by other musical groups.
• Continually seek to enable all who have gifts for music to serve God in worship by recruiting volunteer musicians and leading rehearsals.
• Provide coaching and coordination for all traditional special music soloists and ensembles.
• Use music publishing software to create lead sheets and bulletin scores.
• Maintain knowledge of the repertoire of sacred music, especially that which would be appropriate for Shepherd of the Hills.
• Arrange for substitute music leaders during vacations.
• Assist in rehearsing musicians for special music.
